While you were flying, I was putting down roots

Dos à Deux

While you were flying, I was putting down roots

Artur Luanda Ribeiro and André Curti

In While you were flying, I was putting down roots no words are spoken, the dramaturgy is guided by the bodies in dialogue with the visual arts, cinema, dance and theatre. In this navigation through various languages, the meanings are also diverse and reach the audience in multiple and plural layers. Thus, between dream and reality, we are only a tangle of shadows and lights, before the immeasurable, the immensity and the mystery of the abyss. This show is a journey and, at the same time, disturbs our perceptions and reveals the strength of the oneiric. A time- space where love and healing are manifestations of our consciousness beyond our fears, anguishes and deep wounds, not always possible to understand the origin. And a scenographic universe that transports us to an oracle, a portal, the suspended time of a dream leads us to our own dreams, to our own abysses.

An experience to see with the ears and hear with the eyes.

Voices will be silences and abyssal gazes.

Company presentation

The company dos à deux was born in Paris in 1998. In 1999 at the Festival d'Avignon, with their first work, the two young Brazilian creators were immediately recognized by the critics and the public, and then with all their creations presented at the festival, such as Dos à deux, Aux pieds de la lettre, Saudade terres D'eau (Adami Prize of the public, 2001), Fragments du désir, Frères de sang, propelling them on the roads of more than 50 countries. In 2015, the two artists wished to return to Brazil, to open a space of creation and a cultural place dedicated to the arts of the Gestures in Rio.

Artur Luanda Ribeiro - Director, dramaturg, choreographer, set designer, lighting designer and performer.

He began his artistic career at the Utopia Research Centre, where, instigated by Márcio Vianna, he began to follow his path in search of autonomy, understanding the actor as a creative force within an artistic process. In order to acquire theoretical support about the authorial work, he enrolls in the course of Theatre at Unirio. At the same time he continues his training in dance at the Escola Angel Vianna, starting his investigative process of the body-tool and its functionality.

In France since 1994, he continues his academic studies at the University Nouvelle Sorbonne-Paris III in the course of Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre Studies. He graduates at the School of Dramatic Body Mime of Paris, directed by Stewen Wasson and Corine Soum, deepening himself in Etienne Decroux’s vast repertoire and his corporeal grammar, which leads him to research what he calls a «poetic actor». In this sense, he identifies ways to develop his expressiveness and starts to study techniques such as clown, comedy dell’art, nô, butoh, topeng and contact improvisation. Simultaneously, he worked with the companies In Extremis, by Catherine Dubois; Théâtre Yunké, by Serge Poncelet; and under the direction of Joseph Nadj and Annie Schindler.

In 1998, together with André Curti, he founds the Companhia Dos à Deux, deepening his research as actor-author and amplifying the work of complete signature, creating a singular gestural dramaturgy and taking over unknown paths that the work itself presented as a necessity of development in the creation of a unison work, also acting in the direction, lighting, choreography and scenography of the scenic plays of the company. With Cia Dos à Deux he received the award for best direction by the International Festival of Kosovo (2005), best direction by the Adami Award of the Avignon Festival (2005), best direction by the Mindelact Festival in Cape Verde (2006), best choreography by the Special Shell Award (2010), best actor and best scenography by the Shell Award (2014), best scenography by the Shell Award (2016), best scenography and lighting by the Cesgranrio Award (2016), best direction, spectacle and lighting by the APTR Award (2016) and best lighting by the Questão de Crítica Award (2016). Besides the partnership in the creation of the plays, he develops with André Curti a teaching method about the dramaturgies of the body, giving workshops all over the world and at Cia’s headquarters in Rio de Janeiro.

André Curti - Director, playwright, choreographer, set designer and performer.

He began his artistic career in 1983, in the schools Jogo Estúdio and Vento Forte, where he developed the practice of actor’s games and deepened the study of the method developed by Stanislavski, in body expression and physical work based on concepts of senso-perception and «Eutonia» by Gerda Alexander, with the teacher Eugénia Tereza de Andrade, improving a more consistent physical foundation, appropriating himself of the work of expan- sion of perception, body awareness and access to knowledge that is proper to the body.
At the age of 14, he premiered his first professional theatrical show directed by Eugênia Tereza de Andrade, «The House of Bernarda Alba», by Garcia Lorca, where he interpreted the mother of Bernarda Alba. Still at the school Jogo estúdio, at the age of 17, he starts teaching drama to an audience of amateurs. In cinema, he worked with Hilda Machado and Renato Tapajós. In 1990, at the age of 19, decides to leave Brazil to live in Paris, France. With the intention of studying theatre from the French language, he starts to work on a repertoire of classic and contemporary theatre texts with Odile Michel and Patrick Olivier, in the company Le G.R.A.L Théâtre.

In this same company, he performs in the shows «Le Cycle du Crab» by Gabriel Cousin and «Écoles des Bouffons» by Michel de Ghelderode. In cinema, he has worked with Olivier Fournot and Jöel Daguerre. He joins the dance-theatre company «À Fleur de Peau», directed by Denise Namura and Michel Budghan, where he explores the verb and the movement as narrative potentialities within the scenic construction. Performs and dances in the shows «Scarlet Tout Court» and «Quatre-quarts», «Pendant que J’y Pense», directed by Michel Bugdhan and Denise Namura. Performs and participates in the creation process of the street show, «Poste Restante» in Norway, directed by Anne-Marit Saether.
