Antiwords

Petr Boháč and Miřenka Čechová

Non-verbal theatre with French surtitles.

Internationally acclaimed performance inspired by the play Audience by Czech dissident, playwright, and president Václav Havel.

What happens when a brewer and a persecuted artist—an alter ego of Václav Havel himself—meet on stage? After Berlin, Osaka, Bordeaux, Saint-Étienne, Tokyo, Washington, New York, London, Beijing, Oslo, Seoul, Edinburgh… finally Avignon!

Antiwords is an explosive production, very freely inspired by the original play, where Czech beer flows freely and two female performers wearing enormous masks sweep the audience into a dizzying whirlwind of nonsense and absurdity.

Director Petr Boháč returns to the Avignon Festival after a year, following the sold-out and critically acclaimed production The Last of the Soviets, to present the Avignon audience with another dose of cruel and absurd humour that touches the very essence of truth in theatre:

“With The Last of the Soviets, the truth of theatre keeps watch and continues to make us shudder.” (La Provence)

„Unique, powerful and highly recommended“ DC Metro.

“Artful. Brilliant. Irreverent. Simple, yet genius.“ DC Theatre Scene.

”a healthy dosage of the absurd.” The Skinny

“The body language deployed by both performers is hilariously, accurately, expressive.” The Herald UK.

Two actresses, a case of genuine Czech beer, huge original masks and absurd humour of Vaclav Havel.
