Dress Code

Julien Carlier

Dress Code is a dive into the universe of breakdance. The spectator is invited to observe this microcosm and to zoom in until he finds himself close to the dancers.

Constructed like a ritual, the performance brings together individuals and their experiences, intimacy and virtuosity. Dress Code thus opens up, from the inside, an access “to the driving forces of what is often seen as pure technical prowess”. In a space shaped by light, the strengths and weaknesses of this quintet emerge, the singularity of the individuals and the mechanics of the group. Like a test, an endurance run in which the idea of competition is revealed, but also the mutual support that binds together the singular and varied world of breakdance.

Julien Carlier delivers a powerful and fragile choreography, virtuoso and intimate. A jewel.

Company presentation

Abis was created in 2017 and is based on the work of choreographer Julien Carlier. It asserts an experimental approach, constantly mixing disciplines and claiming a hybrid aspect. Through this structure, the desire is to create a global project bringing together different actions: the creation of long projects spread over several years but also shorter performances, and moments of research via the LABOS project - Choreographic Research Laboratory - developed since 2018.

Julien Carlier - choreographer

Julien Carlier (1985, Brussels) is a self-taught dancer who started dancing through breakdancing. After obtaining a master's degree in physiotherapy at the ULB, he became interested in choreography, followed training courses in Brussels (Tremplin Hip Hop, 2012) and Paris (Prototype, 2017-2018), and had his first stage experiences through interdisciplinary artistic exchanges, followed by projects conceived and created as a collective. This heterogeneous background nourishes his work as a creator, where the technicality of hip-hop vocabulary is articulated with a sensitive listening.
