Dracula – Lucy’s Dream

Yngvild Aspeli

In her visual adaptation of the famous myth of Dracula, Yngvild Aspeli chooses to freely draw inspiration from the story of Bram Stoker to focus more particularly on women. The show thus focuses on the experience of the character of Lucy – and her fight against her inner demon embodied by Dracula, who then represents domination, dependence, addiction to a destructive force. A metaphor of control, both forced and desired, seductive and deceptive.
The audience embarks on an intimate and psychic journey, in this phantasmagorical universe that Lucy has built for herself, in which she has plunged and against which she fights.

There are mysteries which men can only guess at, which age by age they may solve only in part. Strange things, extraordinary things, things that make you doubt if you are mad or sane. But don't you think that there are things which you cannot understand, and yet which are?

Company presentation

Yngvild Aspeli, artistic director of Plexus Polaire, develops a visual world that brings our most buried feelings to life. The use of life-sized puppets is at the center of her work, but the actor’s performance, the presence of the music and the use of light and video are all equal elements in communicating the story.
Within Plexus Polaire, she has directed: Signals (2011), Opera Opaque (2013), Ashes (2014), Chambre noire (2017), Moby Dick (2020), Dracula (2022) – and soon, A Doll’s House that will premiere in Autumn 2023.

In the press

“The director has no equal in creating dreamlike and hypnotic universes, armed with her visual talent, the music of her sidekick Ane Marthe Sorlien Holen, a sort of Norwegian Björk, and her human-sized, extremely expressive puppets.”

Fabienne Darge (Le Monde)

"This retelling of the myth, not very talkative nor bloody, rather subtle and suggestive, which finds on the side of women and victims a new understanding of the vampire, is appealing. It is a show with strong images, an original story, for which it is pleasant - even if slightly disturbing, that's the point - to fall for.”

Mathieu Dochtermann (Toute la Culture)

"[It] was very interesting and mindblowing, this version of a Dracula world where death, eroticism, longing and dreams melt into one another[…]. It is absolutely magical how the puppets come to life. There were fantastic manipulators and the puppets had a very realistic appearance. So yes, just go. Run and buy, this is a must-see experience!”

Arne Nøst (Riksteatret)

“Five exceptionally talented puppeteers and actors lead us into the spiritual darkness of the story's main character, Lucy. It is as if Lucy was searching for her inner self in some kind of nocturnal maze full of unpredictable delusions and potential dangers. The universe is well composed, dark and suggestive.”
