VIVAT MESSI

Miřenka Čechová and Petr Boháč with Daniel Pražák, Taro Troupe, badfocus (Prokop Korb)

When I was nervous, I grabbed the ball and went to kick it. I knew I couldn’t change the things around me, but I could change myself. If Messi could do it, so could I. You mustn’t give up. You must have a dream. A penalty can’t be saved, it can only be kicked wrong. Anyone can be the best at something. Many young boys around the world dream of being Lionel Messi. He is their king, their unattainable idol. But in the end, it turns out that anyone can become a hero.

A performance about football, about Messi, about freestyle, which motivates children all over the world. World freestyle football champion Daniel Pražák meets DJ and musician badfocus on stage to tell a story of determination, will, and the desire to follow your dream. Directed by Petr Boháč and Miřenka Čechová, who return to the form of a multi-genre performance, for which they have previously received awards such as Best of in The Washington Post and the Fringe First Award, presented by the world’s largest theatre festival. Their performance has been seen by audiences from Stockholm to Johannesburg, from New York to Shanghai.

As a child, I needed a hero. If Messi could do it, so could I! In the end, I found him within myself. World freestyle football champion Daniel Pražák shares a story of willpower and the desire to follow your dream.

Company presentation

A group dedicated to physical, visual, and dance theatre, Spitfire Company is one of the most progressive ensembles in the Czech Republic. Critic Mary Brennan from The Herald wrote: “Going to extremes seems to be a default position for any work presented by the Spitfire Company.”

Petr Boháč - scénario, chorégraphie and direction

He is a stage director, a graduate in Czech literature and language, an occasional artist, and a passionate poker player. His productions have been performed in more than twenty countries, including Japan, South Korea, the United States, Israel, South Africa, and Norway. Several of his theatre works created for Spitfire Company have received international and national awards, including the Fringe First Award, the Herald Angel Award, Aerowaves Priority Companies 2014, the Theatrical Newspaper Awards, and the Czech Dance Platform Awards. He is currently the artistic director of the Palác Akropolis theatre, whose programming focuses on projects that combine music and theatre. His creative poetics are based on the exploration of new theatrical practices and on themes that engage with contemporary society.

Miřenka Čechová - scénario, chorégraphie and direction

She is a performer, choreographer, director, and writer, and the author of the books Miss AmeriKa and Baletky. She leads the companies Spitfire Company and Tantehorse. Her theatrical productions, most of which are original creations, have been acclaimed and celebrated on both Czech and international stages. They have been honored with awards such as The Best of Contemporary Dance by The Washington Post and the Herald Angel Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Her work is characterized by a wide range of media, genres, and modes of expression, as well as by her experimentation with unconventional forms. She has directed, among others, the operas Opera and the French Revolution (for the Opera Lafayette Ensemble, performed at the Rose Theatre in Lincoln Center, New York, and later at the Lisner Auditorium in Washington, D.C.) and Women such as myself by Hong Kong composer Daniela Lo (performed at NODO – New Opera Days in Ostrava).

Daniel Pražák - performer

Daniel Pražák has been practicing freestyle football for over 10 years. During this time, he has won more than twenty trophies. He is the only Czech in history to have earned the title of world champion in freestyle football in the "sick three" discipline — a competition that focuses on performing the three most difficult tricks in a row. In addition, he is a multiple-time Czech national champion.

Taro Troupe - performer

Taro Troupe is a performer, acrobat, and theater creator of Spanish-Japanese origin, living in Prague. His work encompasses a wide range of performative disciplines, from physical theater to contemporary dance, acrobatics, and public speaking, with a strong connection to the human body.
He studied physical theater at the Real Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático in Madrid. In 2021, he co-founded the physical theater company Nhung&kol, where he also works as a performer. Since 2024, he has also been a key member of Losers Cirque Company. He has collaborated with companies such as Laternna Magika, Pan.Optikum Aktionstheater, and others. With Spitfire Company, he can be seen in the performance Vivat Messi.

In the press

Vivat Messi is capable of sparking mass euphoria and inspiring many a dreamer and loner to embark on a journey — even if that path includes countless detours and hardships. In this context, football as a “deceptive object” becomes a cleverly chosen metaphor and a universally understood language across the globe.

OperaPlus

The performance VIVAT MESSI has great potential to attract families who wouldn’t normally visit the theatre for a dance or multimedia production… And for those who aren’t particularly interested in football, it conveys the energy and shared euphoria that this sport brings to all who are passionate about it.
