What feminist values should you pass on to your daughter? Ludmilla Dabo gives a musical reading of the letter sent by Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie to her friend
In 2017, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie wrote this letter to a childhood friend, a fellow Nigerian, who was wondering what feminist values to pass on to her daughter.
Nine years later, this letter has lost none of its evocative power. It speaks to the dream of seeing women’s emancipation continue to emerge in the face of any constraints related to emotions, sex, identity, and gender roles.
After being invited to explore this text in Avignon in 2023 as part of France Culture’s readings, Ludmilla Dabo revisits it in a musical setting blending electro and free jazz, where musicians Gilles Normand and Anthony Capelli—far from being mere accompanists—serve as counterpoints to the author’s words, at times in harmony, at times in suspense, to give her language a dimension that is at once poetic, committed, and reflective, oscillating between gentleness and vehemence.
“Just because you're a girl” is never a reason for anything. Never.
Company presentation
The Libomna company was founded to bring Ludmilla Dabo’s projects to life. An actress, singer, writer, and director, she explores the role of women in all their diversity, as well as the role of cultures of origin in family traditions. In 2022, she premiered the provocative piece “Ceci n’est qu’une histoire de Balance” at Avignon In and recently created “Musiques en Héritage”—a journey through the musical memories of the company’s artists. She has performed in David Lescot’s “Portrait de Ludmilla en Nina Simone,” presented at La Manufacture and on tour worldwide ever since.
