The origins of the show lie in the revolt of an artist confronted with the rise of intolerance, who explores the notion of resistance from the perspective of black women.
Alone on stage, naked, the artist summons what she is: a dancer, a choreographer, a 44 year old mixed-race woman exposing her body. Here, nudity ceases to be a question and becomes manifest. How can we get rid of the image of the black/mixed-blood woman as an exotic, hyper-sexualised body? And what about my heart?
A fascinating work of radical beauty.
A subtle and committed solo
Company presentation
Created by Soraya Thomas in 2011 in La Réunion, Morphose places contemporary dance, music and crossed artistic disciplines at the centre of its projects. The company explores the link between intimate and public spaces in a choreographic creation based on the centre, the succession, the relationship to the other and to space. With duality, poetry, humanity and animality, through pure movement, Morphose's dance speaks to us of life, people, and takes us into a spiral as rocky as it is delicate.
Soraya Thomas - Choreographer & dancer
Trained at the Annecy Conservatory, Soraya Thomas obtained her State Diploma in dance teaching in 2000, before joining the Compagnie Coline, a professional integration unit for young contemporary dancers. There she met Jean-Claude Gallotta, Michel Kéléménis and Myriam Burns, for whom she took on roles. After arriving in Reunion Island in 2002, she collaborated as a performer in the projects of the Danse en L'R - Éric Languet company which produced her first choreographic piece in 2007, "J'ai pas cherché...?". In 2011, she founded Morphose and began her research on public and intimate spaces, the common thread of her artistic approach. In 2015, "Barry n'est pas complètement blanc", a piece for three dancers, anchors her singular universe a little more on La Réunion. In 2017, "Head rush" confirms the physical and political commitment of her choreographic work, which has now been spotted in mainland France. In 2019, she begins her triptych on revolt and intimacy with "La Révolte des papillons", a show for the street acclaimed in Reunion Island and at the Aurillac International Festival. The second part, the solo manifesto "And my heart in all of this?", was created in October 2020. Soraya Thomas is currently working on the last piece of this trilogy: "Souffle".
