ALABAMA SONG

She was the wild child of the Roaring Twenties, America’s “first tomboy”, an artist in her own right, forgotten in the shadow of her husband, a famous author. She was crushed by the weight of a patriarchal society, committed for schizophrenia… Discover the incredible story of Zelda, the wife of Francis Scott Fitzgerald. In a dizzying set design, the festive, fast-paced jazz of the day sets the tempo of their intense love story. Alabama Song, winner of the Goncourt Prize in 2007,  explores with incredible sensitivity the scandalous fate a woman forced to fight for freedom and recognition. After a series of sold-out Parisian performances, the latest creation by Guillaume Barbot (Club 27, On a Fort Mal Dormi, Heroe(s), co-creation Anguille Sous Roche) comes to Avignon for the very first time.

Some people hide to steal, kill, betray, love, orgasm… I had to hide to write. I was barely twenty when I met a man not much older than myself, who swept me away. He wanted to rule my life and he did, quite badly.

Company presentation

The Coup de Poker theater company, under the creative direction of Guillaume Barbot, has already produced fifteen plays, including L’Evasion de Kamo, On a Fort Mal Dormi, L’Histoire Vraie d’un Punk Converti à Trenet. Each creation is based on a non-theatrical text and mixes drama and music. Societal issues are explored poetically, with humanity. Interwoven portraits use the musicality of language and direct contact with the audience as their driving force. The company is subsidized by the DRAC IDF and associated with the Théâtre de Chelles and the DSN Sc Nat in Dieppe.
